How to oil and clean a new S&W M&P 9mm compact?

I just bought a brand new Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm compact and am wondering how I should clean it before I take it shooting. I bought a can of Rem Oil and a gun cleaning kit. The Rem Oil says that it is a cleaner and a lubricant. Does that mean I can wipe down the gun and barrel with it and also use it to lubricate the moving parts? Should I do anything else with it before I shoot it or get a different oil? This is my first gun I have ever owned, so any oiling/cleaning/taking care of the gun advice I could get would be greatly appreciated.
