Is $1,200 considered grand larceny? Someone cashed a $1,200 check after I gave him cash?

I hired a handyman and gave him a check for $1,070. He claimed he was unable to cash it and asked me to deposit cash into his account, which he gave me the information for. He had done good work, worked hard and seemed very honest so I did as he asked and added a $200 bonus. He acknowledged receipt of this deposit and I have the deposit slip to show what I did. He claimed his mother was dying and would return my check when he had a chance. One month later, he DEPOSITED my check so now he has been paid twice. He had no authorization to deposit that check but since I gave it to him, I'm afraid I might have screwed myself. I emailed him and he promised to return the full $1070 plus the bonus but of course I have received nothing. I want to go to the police and press charges. Is this considered grand larceny?
