What's the purpose of "honor killings?"?

I don't really see the honor in them. Killing innocent people for "honor" doesn't make any sense and I don't understand why a religion would support it. A lot of the killings happens because the daughter decides to date outside their religion, which doesn't make sense. Maybe someone can explain this tomfoolery to me.
